2K Recruits Apex Legends Producer to Rescue Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Follows Poor Feedback

The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the necessity for a more defined vision.

The president expressed that the team is now reimagining the project with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the complete content from the president's memo:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a more distinct brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to mind and reimagined the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to achieve its ambition to our audience.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of the team. After some time of conversations, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.

Ben’s leadership and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most popular series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in receiving Ben next week. We are all excited to continue witnessing the progress of the game in the time to follow.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a early access event. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that shift every match. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."

Project Ethos has not yet received an confirmed launch window or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as creation advances.
